Injuries, Deaths Still Prevalent Among Texas Construction Workers

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) compiles all of the occupational injury data from Texas and across the U.S. They total the injuries and deaths in each occupation and then break them down by cause and type of injury. As Dallas, Texas construction accident attorneys, we are very interested in this data. By learning more about the causes of serious on-the-job accidents, the BLS, OSHA and other government safety agencies can better craft safety rules and regulations, all in the hope that accidents will be avoided, lives saved.

On-the-Job Accident Trends

Overall, fatal work injuries remained steady in 2010. In both 2009 and 2010, just over 4,500 workers were killed on the job. When looking at the rate of fatal work injuries by type of incident, compared between 2009 and 2010, it was found that:

  • Fatal work injuries in the private mining sector rose by 74%. Researches cite the incidents at the Upper Big Branch Mine and the Deepwater Horizon oilrig as major factors in the jump.
  • Work related fatalities caused by fires on the job site doubled. In 2010 there were 109 deaths caused by fire. This is the highest count since 2003.
  • Transportation incidents accounted for almost 2 out of every 5 fatal work injuries. Incidents that took place away from a roadway, such as an overturned tractor, increased by 4%.
  • In the construction trade, fatal work injuries decreased by 9%. This is the lowest level since 2006.

The Most Dangerous Jobs in Texas
As in most states, construction workers in Texas have a very high rate of injuries and accidents at work. In our state, construction involves not only the building of houses and other structures, but also thousands of miles of road construction and work on and around oilrigs. Unfortunately, the diversity of the construction trade in Texas makes for an increased number of accidents, injuries, and deaths.

If you have been injured while working on a construction site, you need an attorney who knows exactly how to help you.
