The Five Most Dangerous Auto Recalls Revealed

Car recalls have been occurring for more than 40 years. Some of the most dangerous car defects resulted in the injuries and deaths of many innocent people in Texas and across the nation. The experts at Wheels.ca found the top five most notorious motor vehicle recalls. In this article, we will look at which manufacturers were responsible for the defects, as well as how many people were affected. Our Dallas auto defect lawyershope that this will help you to better understand the size and scope of car part recalls in the United States.

Ford Recall of 2008 to 2009: This recall affected 14.1 million vehicles. The issue was a defective cruise control switch that had the potential to malfunction and light on fire. Many vehicles did catch fire, and the recall was expanded to include every single Ford, Mercury and Lincoln car, truck and SUV which had been fitted with cruise control and sold between 1993 and 2004.
Ford Recall of 1996: Unfortunately, the above recall was not the only massive recall issued by Ford. In this earlier recall, 7.9 million vehicles were recalled for a bad ignition switch. The bad switch lead to the recall of 12 models, sold from 1988 to 1993. The ignition switch, like the more recent defective cruise control switch, could short circuit, overheat and catch on fire. After many customer complaints, the massive recall was issued.
GM Recall of 1971: The recall of over 6.7 General Motors vehicles was announced after many customer complaints regarding their vehicles suddenly accelerating out of control. While this was frightening in and of itself, the cause of the recall was even scarier. It was soon determined that the sudden acceleration was caused by the engine of the car coming loose from its mounts and pressing on the throttle cable.
GM Recall of 1981: General Motors appears again on the top 5 list with its 1981 recall. During this recall, it was found that the suspension of the car was malfunctioning, leaving the driver unable to steer at all. The bolts that held the suspension of the car would come loose. This caused the suspension to come loose from the chassis, making the vehicle impossible to steer.
Ford Recall of 1972: Just over 4.1 million cars were part of this recall. This recall was due to a highly dangerous flaw in the design of the seatbelt. The seatbelt sat too close to the metal casing of the seats. This led the belt to rub on the metal and weaken over time. In some cases, to the seat belt completely come apart.
