A Traumatic Brain Injury Can Forever Alter Your Life

West Texas car accidents cause many problems for many people, but none are more devastating than those resulting in traumatic brain injury (TBI). One moment everything is fine and the next, a long and difficult road to recovery spans out in front of the victims of this most serious type of injury.

Of the approximately one million people who suffer TBIs each year, the majority is due to automobile crashes. And high speed or hitting the head is not always the cause. An accident that occurs at a slow rate of speed may cause serious injury to the brain.

Brain injuries that can occur include the following:

Bleeding in the brain is a great cause for concern. Because there is only so much room in the skull for expansion, the brain bleed can exert pressure on soft brain tissue. Because it is so delicate, this tissue can stop functioning normally or even die. Depending where in the brain the tissue is affected, that function may be impaired or even stop. This includes the critical functions of breathing and heart rate.

Bruising is a second liability. In an accident, the brain is thrown forward into the front of the skull. Then, just as quickly, it is thrown backward into the back of the skull. This can lead to bruising of the brain and, again, cause a dangerous change in function.

Tearing happens to the soft brain tissue and is especially difficult to diagnose immediately, as it does not show up on every test. Usually medical experts will use an MRI or CT scan to look at brain. Unfortunately, tiny, microscopic tears do not always show up.

Swelling is often a direct consequence of brain trauma. Like any other part of the body, when an injury occurs, the part often swells. But there is no room in the skull for the brain to expand, so pressure builds following an accident. As in bruising and bleeding, the brain can only stand so much pressure before basic functions become impaired.
